You might not have guessed but you can easily make your own taco seasoning by mixing together a lot of spices that you have in your pantry. Once you make your own taco seasoning, you are never going to get another premix from the store again!
Taco seasoning typically consists of salt, chilli powder, onion powder, garlic powder and warming spices (cumin, paprika, oregano). Since you are making it from scratch, you can customize it to enhance the flavours you enjoy. Some people add a little more garlic powder and others who enjoy more spice might add a little more chilli powder.
What can i use Taco Seasoning for?
As the name suggests, this spice mix is perfect of all kinds of tacos, fajitas, quesadilla, etc. Simply add 2 tablespoons per pound of meat as you are cooking, and watch as they absorb all the flavours. You can add a pinch of cornstarch to create a thicker ‘sauce’ if preferred.
You could also use it as a dry rub for your meats in a barbecue, sprinkle on some to your roast vegetables, create a delicious dip by adding some of this spice mix to yoghurt or sour cream – the possibilities are endless!
With this taco seasoning stashed away in your pantry, you will always be ready to give any dish an extra flavour boost.
Creating your own Taco spice mix
Using a dish or jar, add all the spices and mix well. Make sure your surfaces are all dry so that your spice mix can be well mixed and not clump together.
Store using an airtight container in a cool dry areas, and it can last you for at least 6 months for peak freshness. This recipe will yield about 10 tablespoons of taco seasoning.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Spice Mix
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp chili powder
- 2 tbsp cumin
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 1 tbsp ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
Instructions
Taco Seasoning Spice Mix
- Add all of the spices together and mix well.
- Store in an air tight jar and store in a cool, dry place.
To use
- Use 2 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning to replace 1 packet of store bought taco seasoning.
- For ground beef/ chicken, use about 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning per lb.
- If preferred, you can add a little bit of corn starch (1/2 tsp) to your dish when cooking to thicken the taco sauce a little.
